Â鶹¾«Æ· Perth expands opportunities for young people with Duke of Edinburgh Awards
Â鶹¾«Æ· Perth has announced an exciting development to its Next Steps Level 5 programme, offered through the New Opportunities department.

The updated course now allows students to achieve the Duke of Edinburgh Bronze or Silver Award, adding a prestigious and practical element to their educational experience.
Designed to support young people in building confidence, developing key life skills, and gaining real-world experience, the Next Steps course offers a well-rounded curriculum at SCQF Level 5. Students engage in a mix of classroom learning and outdoor challenges, setting them on a strong path toward employment or further study.
Subject Leader Jo Grant explained: "This course is about more than academic achievement, it’s about empowering young people with the confidence, resilience, and life skills they need to thrive.”
The programme focuses on personal development by enhancing digital literacy, self-management, and interpersonal skills. To ensure all students succeed, the course is supported by a Learning Mentor who offers in-class academic assistance, and a Student Development Worker who is available to provide social and emotional support.
In addition, students enrolled in the Skill Up course are also actively working toward their Duke of Edinburgh Bronze Award, in partnership with the YMCA. As part of the 'Skill Section' of their award, students are completing the Dynamic Youth Award, supported by Â鶹¾«Æ· Perth lecturers’ alongside the YMCA team.
These students have also contributed to the local community through gardening volunteer work at Carghill Cemetery, fulfilling the 'Volunteering Section' of their award. Recently, they participated in canoeing activities on Loch Tay as part of their residential 'Expedition Practice', further developing teamwork, resilience, and outdoor skills.
